Ragan Quarter Horses is owned and run by Ray and Kemberly Ragan. We founded our little horse business in 1985 and it has grown from just showing one horse to breeding, training, showing at the national levels and competing for World Championships!! We always enjoyed showing in the local shows and decided to buy our first true show horse in 1987, "Beaus Ugly Trouble" who is a grandson of the great "BEAU BONANZA". And it only got bigger and busier from there!
Besides the horses, we have a 6 year old Min Pin named Luke, a 1 year old German Rottweiler named Duece, and our grandsons 1 year old Boxer Kiera Kay(we are "puppy sitting" her for a few months), 2 cats (Inky and RayAnn), and a 6 foot green iguana named Mickie! So you can tell that we do stay busy and not just with the horses!!!
We have 2 daughters, Christina and Regina, that are now married with families of their own. Christina lives in West Virginia while Regina is here in Kokomo.
Our grandsons Hayden and Isaac (3 years and 1 year old) come to visit about every other month and the first thing Hayden wants to do is head out to the barn to see Ben! Never mind about PapPap and Nana, he wants to see the horses!!! Hayden claims one of the mares, Abby, as his, too. Isaac is beginning to take an interest in the horses now, too. Maybe by the time they are ready to show, Erik and Christina (Dad and Mom) will be closer so the boys can spend a lot of time here at the farm. Right now Hayden thinks it is "fun" to clean the stalls, bet that will change by the time he is older!!!
Since joining the ranks of "Show" people we have shown in a variety of classes in AQHA and APHA, but today we primarily breed for halter and pleasure horses. Ray likes the halter horses and the babies, while Kem would rather be riding, but due to injuries that doesn't happen any more, so she is the "Crew Chief" for all the show horses and their exhibitors during training and at the shows. Kem also handles most of the daily buisiness of the farm, but Ray has to handle the heavy stuff!!!
We decided to get into showing at the national level in 1987 as it seemed a natural step for us as Kem had shown horses most of her life as a teenager and horses we always a part of her life. Ray thinks it is just as easy to feed a "show horse" as it is to feed a "backyard horse" only it takes a lot more work on that show horse!!!!
We decided to buy our own stallion to save on breeding fees and we were not always happy with the way our mares came back from a breeders and by having our own stallion we didn't have to worry about the mare or her baby. We treat all mares as if they are our own while they are here and they get the best of care and so does her foal. They are part of your family and they should be treated that way all the time. Their care and safety should always come first!!!!
